Shincheonji Betrayal Teaching vs the Record: Yoo Jae-yeol

Short answer: Shincheonji teaches that Yoo Jae-yeol’s Tabernacle Temple, whose seven messengers it calls the “seven stars” of Revelation 1:20, broke its covenant and handed the church to a “group of destruction” in 1980. Newspapers and court reports from the 1970s tell a different story: a failed 1969 end-of-the-world prediction, complaints by former members, and Yoo’s arrest in September 1975 and conviction in February 1976, years before the site was cleared for Seoul Grand Park.

Shincheonji teaches that the Tabernacle Temple’s seven messengers were betrayed and their church taken over by a “group of destruction” in 1980. The record from the time shows a failed prophecy, lawsuits by members (critics say including Lee Man-hee), Yoo Jae-yeol’s 1975 arrest and conviction, and the clearing of the site for Seoul Grand Park. Each date below sets Shincheonji’s account beside the record, and each claim is tagged.

How to read the tags

We tag every claim so you can see how far it has been checked. Where we could not confirm something, we say so rather than guess.

Verified
Confirmed by an independent source, such as a newspaper, court ruling or official record
Critics’ claim
Comes from critics or former members. We have not found independent confirmation, so we show it as their claim.
Sources differ
Reliable sources give different dates. We show both, and the note says which source gives which.
SCJ’s own account
What Shincheonji says or teaches, in its own words. It is shown as its account, not as checked fact.

Each tag has an icon and a word, so it does not rely on colour. Tap “Evidence” on a card to see more detail and sources.

Shincheonji's own books and course do not always agree with each other. Some cards below include a "How SCJ's account changed" row, listing each version from oldest to newest. Where those versions disagree, the row is marked Contradiction or Inconsistency. Where a teaching grows across editions without a direct clash, it is marked Developed doctrine. Caution still applies to outside claims, unverified allegations and second-hand quotes.

Contradiction SCJ’s own books give different dates or facts for the same point. Inconsistency SCJ’s accounts describe the same thing in ways that don’t line up. Developed doctrine A teaching, title or dated claim that appears only in later SCJ sources.

    1964–1966

Shincheonji’s newcomers course (Unit 7, The Fulfillment of the Reality) opens its ‘Betrayal’ section with: ‘1964 — Ho-Seng Prayer Centre (director and members). Mr. Yu Snr (Immanuel)’s house used for prayer meetings. 7 Messengers and 1 Elder chosen.’ It then lists 100 days of training in a hut at Mt. Cheonggye from 17 February 1966. It names no Hosaeng leader.

    1964–1966

The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture (entry E0063785) names the Hosaeng Prayer Center’s founder as Kim Yong-gi (김용기), the original name of Kim Jong-gyu (김종규), as Church and Faith (2008) explains and as the Korean New Religions Dictionary entry “장막성전“ gives it: “김종규(본명 김용기. 1925년생)”. It says the center was founded in 1964, moved to Cheonggye-san in Gwacheon in 1965 with about 50 followers, and moved to Jungwon-gun, North Chungcheong, in 1966. That is the same Cheonggye-san area where the Tabernacle Temple later stood. The entry does not mention Yoo or the Tabernacle Temple.

    Verified

The Korean New Religions Dictionary (entry “장막성전“) names Yoo Jae-yeol, his father Yoo In-gu, his mother and his maternal uncle as Hosaeng participants before the Tabernacle Temple was founded.

    Critics’ claim

A 2013 repost titled “대한 기독교 장막성전“ (section “(3) 김종규의 추방“) says Kim Chang-do, Baek Man-bong, Yoo Jae-yeol and others ordered Kim Jong-gyu to leave the area, dating his departure to 24 Nov 1966, and that Yoo invoked Matthew 24:15 and labelled Kim “멸망의 가증한 것“ (“the abomination of desolation”). A 2012 Gijang Church lecture repeats the identification.

    Evidence

The Verified tag covers only the encyclopedia facts. The 24 Nov 1966 expulsion is shown separately as a critics’ claim. The “abomination of desolation” line is repeated in anti-heresy materials; likely from Tak Myung-hwan’s 1974 study.

    14 Mar 1966

On 1 Nov 1965, eight people left the Hosaeng Prayer Center because of corruption. On 14 Mar 1966, after 100 days, they received God’s command and declared a covenant with God. The first Tabernacle Temple, a cottage, was built from 1 to 24 Jun 1966. “The eight were completely faithful.”

Following divine revelation they went up Cheonggye Mountain in Gwacheon-myeon, built a hut, and were taught by the Holy Spirit for 100 days. During this training, at God’s instruction, all seven cut their arteries and made a covenant with God; the priest also cut his artery later.”

    1966 or 14 Mar 1967 *

Around 20 believers who had broken away from the Hosaeng Prayer Center, led by Kim Jong-gyu according to the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture, gathered at Yoo In-gu’s house. Yoo Jae-yeol, with his father’s help, established the Tabernacle Temple. The founding year is given as 1966 by Dong-A Ilbo (3 Apr 1975), while prosecutors in Sept 1975 gave 14 Mar 1967.

    Evidence

Dong-A Ilbo (3 Apr 1975) gives the founding year as 1966; prosecutors, as reported on 6 Sep 1975, gave 14 Mar 1967. For the Hosaeng Prayer Center background, see the 1964–1966 card above.

    14 Sep, 30 Sep or 1 Nov 1969 *

The predicted end of the world did not happen. The date is reported differently: 14 Sep 1969 (per Tabernacle Temple doctrine sources), 1 Nov 1969 (former members, Dong-A Ilbo 16 Mar 1976) or 30 Sep 1969 (Lee Man-hee’s 1985 book). According to former members, three “angels” (Shin Jong-hwan/Moses, Baek Man-bong/Solomon, Shin Gwang-il/Joshua) and many followers left in 1969–1970.

    Evidence

Dong-A Ilbo (16 Mar 1976) reported a rally at which former members, speaking under pseudonyms, said they had been told that on 1 Nov 1969 the world would be destroyed by fire. The account of the departures rests on testimony from former members.

    What Shincheonji teaches

    SCJ’s own account

    1971

SCJ’s pictorial history 신천지발전사 (1997) shows seven stars on the front of the Tabernacle Temple building, which it says was finished on 14 March 1971, and ties them to Revelation 1:20. SCJ’s own captions date the building to 1969–1971. Lee Man-hee’s 1985 book The Reality of Revelation (Revelation 1:20 section) reads the seven stars as seven people, the Tabernacle Temple’s messengers, and does not describe stars on the building.

    1970s

SCJ’s own 1997 book 신천지발전사 (p. 36) shows photo ⑤ with stars over the door, with captions dating the building to 1969–1971. On the same page, SCJ’s “completed Tabernacle Temple” photo shows the twin cross towers and no stars. SCJ’s training materials reproduce these photos too. Critics, including Baroalja (young119.net, 2020) and the Korea Christian Heresy Information Center, say the stars do not appear in other surviving photos of the building, including that “completed Tabernacle Temple” photo, a 1975 Dong-A Ilbo photo and early members’ materials. They say the photo with stars may date from around the demolition and may have been altered. JoongAng Ilbo (2020) says seven stars decorated the entrance but gives no source.

    Verified

A Dong-A Ilbo photo from 3 Apr 1975 shows the building’s front with no stars visible.

    Evidence

This rests on critics’ own photo comparisons. The critics’ points: a man was removed from one version; a window is misaligned after editing; and the stars sit on the cantilevered roof, covering the cross.

Critics compiled these photos to argue no stars appear on the building’s front. Only the 1975 Dong-A photo is dated.

Dated Dong-A Ilbo, 3 Apr 1975, p.7: report on the investigation of the Tabernacle Temple church. The photo shows the building’s front from a distance; no stars are visible in this photo.

    Apr 1975 – Feb 1976

By April 1975 former members had filed a complaint with police (Dong-A Ilbo, 3 Apr 1975). Yoo was arrested on 6 Sep 1975 by the Yeongdeungpo branch of the Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office on charges including fraud, extortion, false accusation and violent acts. Prosecutors sought 15 years (14 Feb 1976). On 28 Feb 1976 he was sentenced to 5 years. SCJ’s training deck skips Yoo’s 1975 arrest and conviction entirely.

    Evidence

The people who made the complaint public in 1975 were former members of the church (Dong-A Ilbo, 3 Apr 1975). Kyunghyang Shinmun (24 Sep 1975) reported further allegations by prosecutors; these are allegations, not court findings. On the same day Dong-A Ilbo reported that Yoo was also booked under the reserve forces, forestry and building laws.

Prosecutors’ allegations reported by Kyunghyang Shinmun (not court findings):

    • Prosecutors alleged that Yoo took about ₩20 million from followers, including a 1.2-carat diamond obtained from elder Park Eun-hee in April 1970 and pawned for ₩1 million, and a mortgage of ₩1 million on follower Park Jong-hwa’s land in Cheongam-dong, Seoul, in March 1971.
    • The paper reported that about ₩10 million was allegedly collected from followers to hush up the police investigation.
    • Prosecutors said that some 20 people among about 300 households in Makgye 2-ri died of malnutrition between January and July 1975.
    • Reserve-forces company commander Shim Sang-tae was arrested on suspicion of falsely recording Yoo as attending mobilization training and reporting him, a high-school dropout, as a seminary graduate.

We found no Shincheonji account of this ruling.

    What the record shows

    Verified

    10 Jul 1976

On 10 Jul 1976 the appeal court overturned the original sentence and gave Yoo 2 years 6 months, suspended for 4 years.

    Evidence

Chosun Ilbo (11 Jul 1976) names the court as Appeals Division 3 of the Seoul Criminal District Court, presiding judge Lee Wan-hee. Kyunghyang Shinmun (10 Jul 1976) calls it the appeal in a “habitual fraud case”. We found no record of a further appeal to the Supreme Court.

  8. 1977–1980Demolition of the Tabernacle Temple

    What Shincheonji teaches

    SCJ’s own account

    1980

The Tabernacle Temple was a target of President Chun’s cult-cleansing movement, overlooked by the Stewardship Education Center (청지기 교육원). Betrayal: the “destroyers” took over the Tabernacle Temple.

    Critics’ claim

    1977–1980

The land register records that title to the Tabernacle Temple land passed to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on 27 Dec 1977 for the Seoul Grand Park project. The park plan was announced on 10 Jan 1977 (Makgye-ri village history, p. 81), ground was broken on 30 Oct 1978, and the zoo opened 1 May 1984. The building was demolished around 1980. Plans to clear the site were public by 1977, long before the Stewardship Education Center (청지기 교육원) took over the church.

    Evidence

“The Story of Seoul Urban Planning” (1995) by Son Jeong-mok, a 1970s Seoul planning official, is cited by critics as recording the clearance and residents’ resistance in 1979–1980. JoongAng Ilbo reports that the city took ownership of the wider Makgye-ri site at the end of Dec 1980; the temple parcel may have been separate.

    Sep–Oct 1980

According to critics’ accounts, after his probation ended (Jul 1980) Yoo signed the church over to Rev. Oh Pyeong-ho and the Christian Stewardship Institute (14 Sep 1980); it was renamed Isaac Central Church (20 Sep 1980, per Bible and Church), and Yoo left for the US in Oct 1980. Sept 1980: remaining angels reportedly resigned. SCJ’s own program for the church’s ordination service is dated 20 Sep 1981.

    Evidence

Critics say a Shincheonji photo of Yoo “in front of Westminster” shows the entrance of St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue, New York. A video posted by critics reports that Westminster Seminary has no record of Yoo attending.

    What the record shows

    VerifiedCritics’ claim

    1984

Shincheonji’s book The Development of Shincheonji (신천지 발전사, p. 44) said Yoo went to the US in late October 1980, earned a doctorate in theology at Westminster Theological Seminary and returned three and a half years later, in 1984.

    Verified

According to Closer Look Initiative, which reproduces the letter, Westminster Theological Seminary’s registrar replied to an enquiry from South Korea about enrollment from 1 Oct 1980 to 30 Apr 1984. The letter, dated 15 Apr 2009 and signed by Melinda Dugan, Registrar and Director of Financial Aid, says: “According to our records, the following people were never enrolled as students at Westminster Theological Seminary: Jae Yul You, Jae Yeol Ryu.” Disclosure: Bible Vaccine Center and Closer Look Initiative are run by the same team.

    Critics’ claim

Critics also say Yoo did not finish high school. In a video posted by critics, Lee Man-hee is quoted as saying he “never confirmed it” and “simply testified to what he’s heard”. Kukmin Ilbo (9 Jan 2020) reports that the PhD claim is false.

    Critics’ claim

The 4 April 1984 return date comes from the critics’ BDS report; SCJ’s training deck does not say “PhD” or “Westminster”, though the book cited above does.

    Evidence

The registrar’s letter covers both romanizations of Yoo’s name, “Jae Yul You” and “Jae Yeol Ryu” (the same surname, 柳). The images below are reproduced by Closer Look Initiative; the enquiry writer’s name is blanked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does “betrayal” mean in Shincheonji’s teaching?

It is the first stage of Shincheonji’s betrayal, destruction and salvation sequence. Shincheonji teaches that the Tabernacle Temple’s seven messengers betrayed their covenant and that in 1980 church authority passed to a “group of destruction”; Lee Man-hee’s 1985 book says the church handed its authority and denomination “entirely to a gentile denomination.” The Destruction chapter and Salvation chapter cover the next two stages.

Was Yoo Jae-yeol convicted?

Yes. Yoo was arrested on 6 Sep 1975 by the Yeongdeungpo branch of the Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office on charges including fraud, extortion, false accusation and violent acts. On 28 Feb 1976 he was sentenced to 5 years. On 10 Jul 1976 the appeal court overturned the original sentence and gave Yoo 2 years 6 months, suspended for 4 years.

Who filed the complaint against him?

By April 1975 former members had filed a complaint with police (Dong-A Ilbo, 3 Apr 1975).

Did Lee Man-hee sue Yoo Jae-yeol in 1971?

Tak Myung-hwan wrote that on 7 Sep 1971 Lee Man-hee filed a complaint against Yoo on “40-some counts” (quoted in Kookmin Ilbo, 2020).

When was the Tabernacle Temple founded?

The founding year is given as 1966 by Dong-A Ilbo (3 Apr 1975), while prosecutors in Sept 1975 gave 14 Mar 1967.

What happened to the temple building?

The park plan was announced on 10 Jan 1977 (Makgye-ri village history, p. 81), ground was broken on 30 Oct 1978, and the zoo opened 1 May 1984. The building was demolished around 1980.
