Shincheonji · Betrayal, Destruction, Salvation

Shincheonji Betrayal, Destruction, Salvation vs the Record

Short answer: Shincheonji teaches that Revelation was fulfilled in three stages at the Tabernacle Temple in Gwacheon: its leaders betrayed their covenant, “destroyers” led by Oh Pyeong-ho took it over from 1980 to 1984, and salvation began when Lee Man-hee founded Shincheonji on 14 Mar 1984. The record tells a different story: newspapers report Yoo Jae-yeol’s arrest in 1975 and conviction in 1976 after a failed 1969 end-of-the-world prediction; Seoul announced Seoul Grand Park on the site in January 1977; and Shincheonji’s own 1997 history shows the 14 Mar 1984 founding date was announced in September 1984, while Lee’s 1985 book gives no 1984 date.

Shincheonji teaches that the prophecies of Revelation were fulfilled in three stages at the Tabernacle Temple in Gwacheon, South Korea: betrayal (배도), destruction (멸망) and salvation (구원). Each chapter sets Shincheonji’s own account beside 1970s and 1980s newspapers, land and court records, and Shincheonji’s earlier books, and tags every claim.

Why does Shincheonji say you must know betrayal, destruction and salvation?

SCJ’s own books say Christians must believe and understand the sequence of betrayal, destruction and salvation before they can receive salvation (The Creation of Heaven and Earth, 2014, p. 512).

“Christians must believe that Jesus’ promised return occurs according to this logic of betrayal, destruction, and salvation before they can receive that salvation by finding the place where Jesus’ promises have been fulfilled.”

The Creation of Heaven and Earth, English 2nd ed., 2014, p. 512

“Believers must know the New Testament prophecies (e.g., Mt 24 and Revelation) and the work of betrayal, destruction, and salvation that are fulfilled according to these prophecies. This is what it means to distinguish the times, and this is what we must understand and keep.”

The Creation of Heaven and Earth, English 2nd ed., 2014, p. 405

“Only those who truly receive God and his word will enter God’s kingdom, the only place of true salvation in the world. … It is impossible, however, to discern the time of the harvest or recognize the harvesters without first understanding both the events of betrayal, destruction, and salvation that take place at the time of the harvest and the true meaning of the parables in the Bible.”

Does Shincheonji pass the Deuteronomy 18 test for a false prophet?

No: SCJ’s own accounts of events it calls fulfilled have been redated, renamed and moved back into the future, and Deuteronomy 18 says a word that does not come to pass as spoken is not from God.

20 “But if any prophet presumes to speak anything in my name that I have not authorized him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die. 21 Now if you say to yourselves, ‘How can we tell that a message is not from the Lord?’ — 22 whenever a prophet speaks in my name and the prediction is not fulfilled, then I have not spoken it; the prophet has presumed to speak it, so you need not fear him.”

Deuteronomy 18:20–22 (opens in new tab) (NET)

The test is simple. God’s word comes to pass as spoken.

When an event SCJ calls already fulfilled has to be redated, renamed or moved back into the future, it was not fulfilled as SCJ first said. By Deuteronomy 18’s test, that word did not come from God.

“God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a human being, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it happen?”

Numbers 23:19 (opens in new tab) (NET)

“So if a prophet prophesied peace and prosperity, it was only known that the Lord truly sent him when what he prophesied came true.”

Jeremiah 28:9 (opens in new tab) (NET)

Applied to SCJ’s own record

  • SCJ dates the start of the destruction to both 14 Sep 1980 and 20 Sep 1981. See the evidence →
  • SCJ’s 1985 book points to the pastor whom the 1981 program names as Lee Cho-joo. The current course names Oh Pyeong-ho. See the evidence →
  • Every SCJ book calls Revelation 18 fulfilled, but in 2023 Lee said, “Revelation has been fulfilled up to chapter 17; chapter 18 onward remains.” See the evidence →
  • SCJ’s own accounts date Lee’s letters to the seven messengers to 1979, March 1980 and September 1980. See the evidence →

SCJ itself says believers must know this fulfillment to be saved. By Deuteronomy 18’s standard, an account that keeps changing isn’t one God spoke.

What the record shows, stage by stage

  • Betrayal (1966–1980): Shincheonji says the Tabernacle Temple’s seven messengers broke their covenant and handed the church over in 1980. Newspapers record a failed 1969 end-of-the-world prediction, a police complaint by former members by April 1975, Yoo Jae-yeol’s arrest on 6 Sep 1975 and his 1976 conviction (5 years, reduced on appeal to 2 years 6 months, suspended).
  • Destruction (1980–1984): Shincheonji’s newcomers course dates it from 14 Sep 1980 to 14 Mar 1984 (42 months); Lee Man-hee’s 1985 book dates the fall to 20 Sep 1981. No record found gives the Stewardship Education Center government power over churches, and Seoul announced the Grand Park on the site on 10 Jan 1977, breaking ground on 30 Oct 1978.
  • Salvation (1984–): Shincheonji dates its founding to 14 Mar 1984. Its own 1997 history, as reproduced by a former member, shows that date was announced on 24 Sep 1984; Lee’s 1985 book has no 1984 date and never calls him “New John”.

Frequently asked questions about Shincheonji’s fulfillment teaching

What is Shincheonji’s betrayal, destruction and salvation teaching?

It is Shincheonji’s account of how Revelation was fulfilled in South Korea, sometimes abbreviated BDS. Shincheonji teaches that the Tabernacle Temple’s seven messengers betrayed their covenant, that in 1980 church authority passed to a “group of destruction” led by Oh Pyeong-ho, and that “salvation” began on 14 Mar 1984, when Lee Man-hee, whom its newcomers course calls “New John” and the promised pastor, founded Shincheonji. Each stage has its own chapter: Betrayal, Destruction and Salvation.

Was Yoo Jae-yeol, the Tabernacle Temple’s leader, convicted?

Yes. Yoo was arrested on 6 Sep 1975 on charges including fraud, extortion, false accusation and violent acts. On 28 Feb 1976 he was sentenced to 5 years; on 10 Jul 1976 the appeal court reduced this to 2 years 6 months, suspended for 4 years. By April 1975 former members had filed a complaint with police (Dong-A Ilbo, 3 Apr 1975). Details are in the Betrayal chapter.

When does Shincheonji say the “destruction” happened?

Shincheonji’s newcomers course dates it from 14 Sep 1980, when it says Oh Pyeong-ho renamed the Tabernacle Temple Isaac Church, to 14 Mar 1984: 42 months. Shincheonji’s sources differ on the renaming (14 Sep 1980 in training, 20 Sep 1980 in Bible and Church), and Lee Man-hee’s 1985 book instead dates the fall to 20 Sep 1981. See the Destruction chapter.

Is the Tabernacle Temple site now Seoul Grand Park’s zoo?

Not proven. The site was slated for Seoul Grand Park when the plan was announced on 10 Jan 1977, ground was broken on 30 Oct 1978, and the park and zoo opened on 1 May 1984. The building was demolished around 1980, but no parcel or demolition record placing the temple under the zoo has been found.

When was Shincheonji founded?

Shincheonji gives 14 Mar 1984. 신천지 발전사 (1997), as reproduced in a former member’s document, shows that date was chosen in an announcement on 24 Sep 1984, after earlier meetings from 1981. A statement attributed to Hong Jong-hyo gives 14 Mar 1980. See the Salvation chapter.

Does Lee Man-hee’s 1985 book call him “New John”?

No. The book speaks of “a John-like figure” and of overcomers, but never names Lee and never mentions 1984. “New John” comes from the newcomers course.

What sources do these chapters use?

Each chapter sets Shincheonji’s own account, from its newcomers course and books, beside 1970s and 1980s newspapers, land and court records, and Shincheonji’s earlier books, and tags every claim. The source notes are on each chapter page.

What is betrayal, destruction and salvation in Shincheonji?

It is the three-step sequence Shincheonji says Revelation was fulfilled in. In SCJ’s teaching, God’s chosen people betray him, destroyers come in and destroy them, and a promised pastor overcomes the destroyers and brings salvation. SCJ places these events in Korea from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Our Betrayal, Destruction and Salvation chapters check each claim against SCJ’s own books and outside records.

Why does Shincheonji say knowing this is needed for salvation?

SCJ’s books tie salvation to it. The Creation of Heaven and Earth (2014, p. 512) says Christians “must believe that Jesus’ promised return occurs according to this logic of betrayal, destruction, and salvation before they can receive that salvation.” The Physical Fulfillment of Revelation (2015, pp. 345–346) says the harvest cannot be discerned “without first understanding both the events of betrayal, destruction, and salvation.”

What is the Deuteronomy 18 test?

Deuteronomy 18:20–22 says that when a prophet speaks in God’s name and the prediction is not fulfilled, God did not speak it. SCJ’s own accounts of events it calls already fulfilled have been redated, renamed and moved back into the future. By that test, those accounts did not come from God.
