How to Tell If a Bible Study Is Shincheonji

Short answer: If your Bible study makes an emphasis on the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, the parables, and the book of Revelation (from Genesis to Revelation), it’s most likely Shincheonji.

Checklist

Signs of a Shincheonji Bible study

  1. 1

A new friend or stranger invites you to a Bible study, and nobody says it’s Shincheonji.

What it may look like: someone you met on campus, at a café, on a dating app or at a “humanities” or “counseling” event suggests a Bible class. They don’t mention a church name.

    Established
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (Established): Guardian Australia saw SCJ training videos and reported that members approach people on campuses, in cafés and on dating apps and invite them to Bible study “without revealing links to the group.” CBS NoCut News (Korea, 2026) attended a humanities seminar and documented the follow-up one-on-one counseling that led into a Bible program. A Korean district court (2020) found that SCJ taught doctrine “under the name of cultural experience programs or Bible study” without first saying it was SCJ. The 2022 Supreme Court overturned the damages award, and in 2023 the retrial ruled for SCJ.

Sources: Guardian news report, 16 Oct 2024 · CBS NoCut News, 29 Sep 2026 · Kidok (주간기독신문) news report, 19 Jan 2020, on the Daejeon District Court Seosan Branch ruling, case 2018가단58184 · Watchman Fellowship profile.

  2. 2

The church behind the study stays hidden until late in the course.

What it may look like: questions about who runs the class get vague answers, or “you’ll understand later.” You learn the name Shincheonji only after months.

    Established
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (Established): The 2020 Korean court found SCJ hid its identity “until [people] were to some degree accustomed to the doctrine,” and Kidok reports SCJ’s own defendants admitted using this method. In 2022 the Korean Supreme Court overturned the damages award, but (per a pro-religious-freedom scholar) agreed on the facts and called the practice something that “can be viewed as an act deserving social and ethical condemnation.” CBS NoCut News published an internal SCJ checklist asking whether a trainee “accept[s] it with a grateful heart when the deception is revealed.” SCJ’s own position: in Aug 2025 SCJ said “revealing one’s religious identity immediately upon first meeting can, in fact, be a rigid and inefficient approach,” and that its Mission Center courses now clearly say they are SCJ. SCJ has also said, after the 2022 ruling, that it “will listen more closely to the concerns of our society.” Note: SCJ’s Aug 2026 public apology was about members joining a political party, not about recruiting.

Sources: Kidok news report on the 2020 Daejeon court ruling · Bitter Winter op-ed by Massimo Introvigne, an academic sympathetic to SCJ, 13 Jan 2023 · CBS NoCut News, 2026 · Shincheonji’s English blog statement, 9 Aug 2025 · Guardian, 2024 · Watchman Fellowship · Hankook Ilbo, 20 Aug 2026, on the party-membership apology.

  3. 3

You’re asked to keep the study quiet or make excuses to family, friends or your church.

What it may look like: “Don’t tell your pastor yet, he won’t understand.” You’re coached to say you’re at a job, a class or a friend’s place.

Established for secrecy and excuses; the specific “don’t tell your pastor” line is reported by former members
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (Established for secrecy and excuses; the specific “don’t tell your pastor” line is reported by former members): An internal SCJ “Mission Center stage criteria” checklist published by CBS NoCut News scores trainees on “whether they make good excuses to people around them” and “whether they no longer want to attend their own church and say it is wrong.” ABC Australia obtained a Zion Christian Mission Centre pledge saying “I will never leak the contents obtained by attending Zion Christian Mission Centre.” The Korean court found that SCJ cut recruits off from people around them. The 2022 Supreme Court overturned the damages award, and in 2023 the retrial ruled for SCJ.

Sources: CBS NoCut News, 2026 · ABC News Australia, 2 Feb 2026 · Kidok news report on the 2020 Daejeon court ruling.

  4. 4

The class becomes a months-long, multi-level course at a “Center,” with high attendance pressure and a final exam.

What it may look like: first one-on-one sessions (“Gospel Room”), then a class several times a week for 6 to 10 months at a “Center” or “Mission Center.” Your “classmate” calls you the night before and walks you home. The course ends with a long written test and a “graduation.”

    Established
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (Established): Watchman Fellowship describes a several-month “Center Class” with an introduction and three levels (Basics, Secrets/parables, Revelation’s Fulfillment) ending in a test. CBS NoCut News describes the route counseling → Gospel Room → mission center course. Guardian reports training videos telling recruiters to call recruits the night before, accompany them, sit next to them, and of an 8–10 month course ending in an exam of hundreds of questions. An academic sympathetic to SCJ confirms a demanding course and an exam with about 300 written questions. SCJ’s own site says Zion Christian Mission Center has 757,704 graduates.

Sources: Watchman Fellowship · CBS NoCut News, 2026 · Guardian, 2024 · Bitter Winter, 2023 · Shincheonji’s own website, shincheonji.org Mission Center page.

  5. 5

Some of your “fellow students” are already members.

What it may look like: a classmate who says “I’m new too” always sits beside you, answers your doubts and never lets you leave alone.

    Established
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (Established): Guardian reports training telling leaders to “pretend to be new” and to say “I’m like you. I never saw the Bible before,” and to “minimise fruit-to-fruit contact.” The 2020 Korean court found SCJ members posed as fellow recruits to calm doubts. The 2022 Supreme Court overturned the damages award, and in 2023 the retrial ruled for SCJ. Watchman Fellowship describes these as “maintainers.” (SCJ’s internal term is reported as “leaf.”)

Sources: Guardian, 2024 · Kidok news report on the 2020 Daejeon court ruling · Watchman Fellowship.

  6. 6

You’re told not to look the group up online.

What it may look like: “There’s a lot of persecution online; only research with us.”

    Reported by former members
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (Reported by former members): A former member told ABC that his team told pastors “You shouldn’t believe what is online, but come listen to us.” Several Reddit posts by former and current students describe the same warning. These are all former-member or participant accounts.

Sources: ABC News Australia, 2026, quoting a former member · Former members’ posts on Reddit r/Shincheonji.

  7. 7

A “promised pastor” or “the one who overcomes” is alive today, and you must find him to be saved.

What it may look like: lessons on Revelation 2–3 conclude that one living man is “the one who overcomes” and that salvation comes only through him.

    SCJ’s own teaching
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (SCJ’s own teaching): “All believers must find the one who overcomes—the pastor promised in Rv 2-3—in order to attain heaven and eternal life.” Also: Jesus “will return in spirit to unite with his promised pastor (Mt 24:27).”

Sources: Shincheonji’s own book, The Creation of Heaven and Earth (2009 English ed.), p. 144 (page for the “one who overcomes” line not confirmed) · Same book (2014 2nd ed.), p. 81, as quoted by Bible Vaccine Center’s glossary.

  8. 8

The whole Bible is treated as coded parables or secrets that only one person can unlock.

What it may look like: a fixed list such as seed = word, tree = person, bird = spirit, and the claim that the “secrets” are hidden until explained.

    SCJ’s own teaching
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (SCJ’s own teaching): “The secrets that have been hidden since the creation of the world, however, are only made known when the parables God used to hide them are explained.” SCJ’s 2021 Explanation of Parables gives 44 fixed meanings, e.g. “The true meaning of the figurative seed is the word” (p. 10).

Sources: Shincheonji’s own books: The Creation of Heaven and Earth (2009 English ed.) · The Explanation of Parables (2021), pp. 10–84, as quoted by Bible Vaccine Center.

  9. 9

“Betrayal, destruction, salvation,” with Revelation being fulfilled now in Korea.

What it may look like: a chart showing every prophecy follows betrayal → destruction → salvation, ending with real events and people in Gwacheon, South Korea.

    SCJ’s own teaching
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (SCJ’s own teaching): “Biblical prophecies are always recorded in the pattern of betrayal, destruction, and salvation.” Knowing it is presented as necessary: “Christians must believe that Jesus’ promised return occurs according to this logic of betrayal, destruction, and salvation before they can receive that salvation…”

Sources: Shincheonji’s own book, The Creation of Heaven and Earth (2009 English ed.), introduction (page not confirmed) · Same book (2014), p. 512 and p. 405, and The Physical Fulfillment of Revelation (2015), pp. 345–346, as quoted by Bible Vaccine Center, biblevaccinecenter.com/shincheonji/fulfillment/.

  10. 10

“Spiritual Israel,” 12 tribes, the 144,000 and a “new John.”

What it may look like: you’re told the 144,000 of Revelation 7 are sealed from 12 tribes named after apostles, that they are “New Spiritual Israel,” and that the teacher is a “new John” who ate the open scroll of Revelation 10.

SCJ’s own teaching; “new John” downgraded, see below
    Evidence and sources

Evidence (SCJ’s own teaching; “new John” downgraded, see below): “New Spiritual Israel is the kingdom that is created in the physical world during the second coming of Jesus.” SCJ’s Mission Center page says it “seals those who have been harvested with the new Word … thereby creating the twelve tribes.” The title “New John” comes from the newcomers’ course; SCJ’s 1985 book speaks only of a “John-like” figure.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I know if my Bible study is Shincheonji?

Look for a pattern, not a single sign. Signs include: a class from someone you recently met that doesn’t name its church; secrecy or excuses to family; a months-long “Center” course ending in an exam; and teaching about a living “promised pastor,” parables as secrets, and “betrayal, destruction, salvation.”

What is Zion Christian Mission Center (ZCMC)?

It is Shincheonji’s Bible-education arm. SCJ’s website describes it as a Bible center that “seals those who have been harvested with the new Word … thereby creating the twelve tribes,” and reports 757,704 graduates and about 443 centers in 92 countries outside Korea.

Is Zion Christian Mission Center the same as Shincheonji?

Yes, it is part of SCJ: SCJ’s own website presents ZCMC as its center, and ABC reports that SCJ’s Australian charity registration confirms the affiliation. Local ZCMC sites may not say so.

Who founded Zion Christian Mission Center?

ZCMC’s own Philippines page says it “was established in 1990 in Seoul, South Korea,” as part of Shincheonji, the group founded by Lee Man-hee. No source we have names a separate personal founder of ZCMC.

What happens at a Zion Christian Mission Center graduation?

Students who finish the multi-month course and pass a written exam graduate and become SCJ members. Watchman Fellowship says graduates are invited to have their names written in “the Book of Life” and to start attending SCJ services. SCJ holds mass ceremonies; its Philippines site reports 103,764 graduates at a joint 2019 event.

What should I do if I think I'm in a Shincheonji Bible study?

Ask the teacher directly, in writing, which church runs the course and whether it is connected to Shincheonji or Zion Christian Mission Center, then compare the answer with the signs above. If you think you are in SCJ, read our guide to leaving Shincheonji safely or talk with us.
