Common questions from pastors
Why should pastors care about Shincheonji?
Shincheonji is targeting churches around the world. Including in the US, UK, India, Australia, New Zealand and Germany, and congregations like yours. In Australia, a spreadsheet “dated from early 2025 and leaked to the ABC shows Shincheonji tracking its attempts to convert 1,157 churches around the country.” (ABC News, 2 Feb 2026)
How do I know if Shincheonji is in my church?
A Bible study that emphasizes the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, the parables and the book of Revelation, often after an invitation from a new friend or stranger who does not name Shincheonji, is most likely Shincheonji. This is explained in Signs of a Shincheonji Bible Study.
How does Shincheonji recruit church members?
Reported outreach may involve people attending a church, building relationships, inviting members to Bible studies without first disclosing the group’s name, or approaching the pastor about unity and cooperation. This is described in When Shincheonji Approaches Your Church.
What should a pastor do if a member is in Shincheonji?
Look for a pattern of warning signs rather than one clue, speak with the member privately and calmly, and verify the facts before making any public claim, while keeping a trusting relationship with the person. This is outlined in If You Suspect Shincheonji in Your Congregation.
What Korean courts have said
In 2020, a Daejeon District Court branch found Shincheonji’s recruiting method unlawful and awarded ₩5,000,000 to one of three former members who sued; on appeal in March 2022, a Daejeon appeals court found members had hidden their Shincheonji affiliation for 5–6 months and awarded ₩5,000,000 to a different plaintiff. (Kukmin Ilbo, 16 Mar 2022)
On 11 Aug 2022, South Korea’s Supreme Court overturned that damages award and sent the case back. It held that religious recruiting can be unlawful in other circumstances, when it loses social appropriateness and goes so far as to take away a person’s freedom to choose a religion, but found no liability here: the plaintiff kept studying after learning the group was Shincheonji, and there was no coercion or loss of property. (Supreme Court of Korea, 2022다227688, 11 Aug 2022)
On remand, on 11 Jul 2023, the Daejeon District Court ruled for Shincheonji, with costs on the plaintiffs. Their lawyer said they would appeal again. (Kidok Portal News, 12 Jul 2023) Shincheonji says it clearly states its affiliation during Bible study.
