What SCJ teaches

This section comes from class notes that an attendee wrote down during SCJ’s 9-month Bible study seminar, posted with the full Closer Look study. They are not SCJ’s printed curriculum, so the wording is the note-taker’s. For this lesson the posted material is the written test and its answer key, so this page summarizes what the test asks and what its answers assume.

The rules and the setup

The test is titled “Examination to Put “The New Covenant We Must Keep” into Action.” The instructions: “You need to score minimum 90% in other to pass. Memorize all the answers word by word prefered.” It has 25 numbered questions, most with several parts. Nearly all ask for a short fixed answer, a list of chapters or a name.

Parables and the new covenant (questions 1 and 3)

Question 1 asks why Jesus spoke in parables, and the answer is that they hold “the secrets of the kingdom of heaven”. An outsider cannot receive atonement “Because one will not know the actual entities.” At the appointed time the “Fulfilled reality (the actual entities)” is made plain. Question 1.5 asks for the chapter on the harvest, and the answer is “Rv 14”. Question 3 asks what the new covenant is. The answer: “Revelation (the events of Revelation)”. The one who keeps it goes to heaven, and the one who does not goes to hell. The keeper is “One who records God’s law (Revelation) on their hearts and minds (the one who is sealed)”. They are “the 12 tribes that have been harvested and sealed.”

Persecution and deception (question 2)

Question 2 takes Matthew 24 and asks who the deceivers are. The answer is “Pastors of coercive conversion.” Nation against nation means “God’s church (nation) and Babylon’s church (nation).” Those who hand people over are “Parents and relatives who were deceived”.

When, where and in what order (questions 4, 5, 7 and 24)

The answers give a date and a place for the start of the fulfillment: “1966” and “The Tabernacle Temple in Gwacheon, at the base of Mt. Cheonggye.” The process runs “betrayal – destruction – harvest -> sealing -> the 12 tribes – the wedding – the first resurrection.” Question 7 asks for the three groups of the betrayers, the destroyers and the savior, and the key names the savior group as Shincheonji.

Chapters by memory (questions 6, 8, 9, 11 to 17)

Many questions ask for chapter lists. The place where heaven comes down is “Rv 3:12, Rv 21:1-3”. The pastor’s work is listed chapter by chapter, from letters in Rv 2-3 to a scroll in Rv 10, a death in Rv 11, a fight in Rv 12, a judging bowl in Rv 16 and a wedding supper in Rv 19. Four women are named: Jezebel, the woman clothed with the sun, the prostitute and the bride. The three needs besides betrayal, destruction and salvation are “God’s seed”, “Blood of Jesus” and “Sealing”. Contrasting chapter pairs are “Rv 6, 7 / Rv 13, 14 / Rv 18, 19”.

Who reads, and the opened scroll (questions 18 to 22)

Question 18.1 asks who the one that reads is, and the answer is “New John.” The revelation John saw on Patmos was “Prophecy”, and when it is fulfilled it can be seen, heard and believed through New John. The chain is “God → Jesus → Angel → John → Servants”. Jesus alone opens the scroll, beginning in Rv 6, and it is fully opened in Rv 8.

Blood and the Passover (questions 8, 10 and 25)

Question 8 says Jesus “promised that they will not be eaten until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Question 8.1 asks for four Revelation verses on who can drink this blood, answered with Rv 1:5-6, 5:9~10, 7:14 and 12:11. Question 10 asks for three verses “concerning the Passover Lamb Jesus’ blood and flesh”, and the key lists “Rv 16:12, Rv 17:14, Rv 18:4”. Question 25.3 names those who pierced Jesus as “Beast”.

The Physical Fulfillment of Revelation, Lee Man-hee (Shincheonji Press), page 91:

“This was fulfilled in the Tabernacle Temple in Gwacheon, Republic of Korea in 1966.”

Page 513:

“Those who keep the new covenant believe the words of Revelation, inscribe them in their hearts, obey them (Rv 1:3), and acknowledge their fulfillment as the truth.”

Creation of Heaven and Earth, Lee Man-hee (Shincheonji Press), page 542:

“Through forgiveness and love, we at Shincheonji believe and keep the new covenant by believing and keeping the revelation of God and Jesus Christ.”

How the lesson notes compare with the books

  • 1966 and Gwacheon. Same teaching (Physical Fulfillment p. 91).
  • The keeper of the new covenant. Same teaching. The key says the keeper records God’s law on hearts and minds; the book says keepers “inscribe them in their hearts” (p. 513).
  • The new covenant is Revelation. Same teaching. The key says “Revelation (the events of Revelation)”; Creation speaks of keeping the covenant “by believing and keeping the revelation of God and Jesus Christ” (p. 542).

What the Bible says

  • The test answers “Rv 14” for the harvest. Revelation 14 describes a sickle and a harvest of the earth. Then I looked, and a white cloud appeared, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man! He had a golden crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. Then another angel came out of the temple, shouting in a loud voice to the one seated on the cloud, “Use your sickle and start to reap, because the time to reap has come, since the earth’s harvest is ripe!” So the one seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped. (Revelation 14:14-16, NET)
  • Question 14.2 cites Hebrews 8:10 for the law written on hearts. For this is the covenant that I will establish with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds, and I will inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be my people. (Hebrews 8:10, NET)
  • Jesus names the cup at the table. And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. (Luke 22:20, NET)
  • Jesus says when he will eat the Passover again. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 22:16, NET)
  • The key lists Revelation 16:12 for the Passover Lamb’s blood and flesh. Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates and dried up its water to prepare the way for the kings from the east. (Revelation 16:12, NET)
  • Revelation 1:3 speaks of the one who reads aloud. Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy aloud, and blessed are those who hear and obey the things written in it, because the time is near! (Revelation 1:3, NET)
  • The key cites Revelation 18:4 for the Passover Lamb’s blood and flesh. It is a call to leave a city. Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, so you will not take part in her sins and so you will not receive her plagues, (Revelation 18:4, NET)

Where SCJ’s reading conflicts with the Bible

This is the first advanced-level test: 25 questions, a 90% pass mark and the instruction “Memorize all the answers word by word.” The answer key states that the new covenant is “Revelation (the events of Revelation),” that the fulfillment began in “1966” at “The Tabernacle Temple in Gwacheon,” that the savior group is Shincheonji, that “the one that reads” in Revelation 1:3 is “New John,” that the deceivers of Matthew 24 are “Pastors of coercive conversion” and that those who hand believers over are “Parents and relatives who were deceived.” Here is what Scripture says about the key answers.

  1. 1. “Memorize all the answers word by word”

  2. 2. Question 1: Parables and atonement

The key says an outsider can’t receive atonement “Because one will not know the actual entities.”

    • Jesus “is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world” (1 John 2:2). Atonement depends on his sacrifice, not on knowing which people in Korea correspond to Revelation’s symbols.
    • Jesus explained his parables to his disciples (Mark 4:34). (See Lessons 3 and 14.)
  3. 3. Question 1.5: The harvest in Revelation 14

    • The answer “Rv 14” is right, and the chapter says who reaps: “seated on the cloud was one like a son of man … So the one seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped” (14:14-16). The Son of Man himself reaps the whole earth from the clouds. It isn’t evangelists recruiting from churches. (See Lesson 76.)
  4. 4. Question 2: Who are the deceivers?

The key says Matthew 24’s deceivers are “Pastors of coercive conversion,” and those who hand believers over are “Parents and relatives who were deceived.”

    • Jesus defined the deceivers: “many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many” (24:5). Later: “if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ … do not believe him” (24:23). The warning targets those who claim a messianic role.
    • Coercion of any kind, including forced “deprogramming,” is wrong, and Christians should oppose it. But labeling the pastors and families who raise concerns as Jesus’ deceivers turns ordinary care into prophesied persecution. (See Lessons 77 and 90.)
    • “nation will rise up in arms against nation” (24:7) describes wars between peoples, not SCJ against other churches.
  5. 5. Question 3: The new covenant

    • The key: “Revelation (the events of Revelation).” Jesus: “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20).
    • The keeper, per the key, goes to heaven, and the non-keeper to hell. Scripture: “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). (See Lessons 87 and 91.)
  6. 6. Questions 4, 5 and 7: 1966, Gwacheon, Shincheonji

    • Revelation contains no dates or places in Korea. Its scenes are worldwide: the beast rules “every tribe, people, language, and nation” (13:7). (See Lesson 103.)
    • On the savior: “Salvation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (7:10). Not to a group.
  7. 7. Question 8: Saying the Passover “will not be eaten until it finds fulfillment”

    • Jesus said he would not eat the Passover again “until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God” (Luke 22:16). In the same meal, he gave the bread and cup to his disciples: “Do this in remembrance of me” (22:19). The church has eaten it ever since, proclaiming “the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).
    • The four verses the key lists for who can drink the blood all speak of it as already effective: Jesus “has set us free from our sins at the cost of his own blood” (Revelation 1:5); “you have purchased” (5:9); “They have washed their robes” (7:14); “they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb” (12:11). (See Lesson 87.)
  8. 8. Question 10: Three verses that don’t mention the Passover

The key lists Revelation 16:12, 17:14 and 18:4 as verses “concerning the Passover Lamb Jesus’ blood and flesh.”

    • 16:12: “the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates and dried up its water.”
    • 17:14: “the Lamb will conquer them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings.”
    • 18:4: “Come out of her, my people.”
    • None mentions blood, flesh or the Passover. A test that requires students to memorize these as the answer trains them to accept the course’s links over the text.
  9. 9. The pastor’s work, chapter by chapter

The key lists the pastor’s role: letters (Rv 2-3), a scroll (Rv 10), a death (Rv 11), a fight (Rv 12), a judging bowl (Rv 16) and a wedding supper (Rv 19).

    • Rv 2-3 and 10: John, writing from Patmos (1:9; 10:10; 22:8). (See Lesson 39.)
    • Rv 11: the two witnesses are killed, raised by “a breath of life from God,” and “went up to heaven in a cloud while their enemies stared at them” (11:7-12). Nothing like that has happened in public view. (See Lesson 96.)
    • Rv 12: “Michael and his angels fought against the dragon” (12:7). (See Lesson 99.)
    • Rv 16: “the seventh angel poured out his bowl” (16:17). (See Lesson 103.)
    • Rv 19: “the wedding celebration of the Lamb has come” (19:7). The groom is the Lamb.
  10. 10. The four women

    • Jezebel, a false prophetess in Thyatira (2:20); the woman clothed with the sun, who gives birth to the male child, the Messiah (12:1-5); the prostitute Babylon (17:1-5); and the bride, “the holy city, Jerusalem” (21:9-10). The bride is God’s whole people, not one man. (See Lessons 54 and 104.)
  11. 11. Question 18: “Who is the one that reads?”

    • The key: “New John.” Revelation 1:3: “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy aloud, and blessed are those who hear and obey” (1:3). In the early church, letters were read aloud to congregations (Colossians 4:16). The blessing is for any reader and every hearer.
    • The key’s own chain is “God → Jesus → Angel → John → Servants” (from 1:1). That’s right, and it ends with John and the servants, not a later John.
  12. 12. Question 25.3: Those who pierced him

    • The key: “Beast.” Revelation 1:7 quotes Zechariah 12:10, and John applies that verse to the crucifixion: “They will look on the one whom they have pierced” (John 19:37). Those who pierced him were those who crucified him, and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him” (Revelation 1:7) when he returns visibly.

The advanced level so far, in one page

What the course teaches, and what Scripture says:

  • Revelation is one group’s history: 1966, Gwacheon, 1980, 1984.
Scripture: Revelation is “The revelation of Jesus Christ” to seven named churches (1:1, 11), showing judgment on the whole world and the Lamb’s victory (5:9; 6:15-17; 19:11-16).
  • New John relives John’s experiences: “I” in Revelation 1, 4 and 10 is New John.
Scripture: “I, John … was on the island called Patmos” (1:9); “I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things” (22:8).
  • Jesus returns invisibly, working through New John’s flesh.
Scripture: “every eye will see him” (1:7).
  • The blood of the Lamb is Jesus’ words; it purchases a kingdom only now.
Scripture: he “has set us free from our sins at the cost of his own blood and has appointed us as a kingdom, as priests” (1:5-6).
  • The trumpets, censer, hail and bowls are people.
Scripture: angels blow the trumpets and pour the bowls (8:6; 11:15; 16:17); an angel holds the censer (8:3-5).
  • The book of life is SCJ’s registry; register and sign a pledge.
Scripture: names were written “since the foundation of the world” (13:8), and Jesus said, “do not take oaths at all—not by heaven … not by earth” (Matthew 5:34-35).
  • The 144,000 were filled, then fell short; COVID-19 was the great tribulation.
Scripture: a claim that doesn’t come to pass is presumptuous (Deuteronomy 18:22); disasters aren’t verdicts on groups (Luke 13:1-5).

The heart of the biblical answer: “Salvation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:10).

What’s happening behind the lesson

These notes are our reading of the lesson text, using Steven Hassan’s BITE model (behavior, information, thought and emotional control). They describe what the text does, not the teacher’s intent. Hassan notes that not every group uses every item. Source: Steven Hassan, BITE Model, Freedom of Mind.

  • Behavior: can make recall a condition of passing. “You need to score minimum 90% in other to pass. Memorize all the answers word by word prefered.”
  • Information: can fix one set of answers (our reading). The key gives one answer to each question, such as “The Tabernacle Temple in Gwacheon, at the base of Mt. Cheonggye.” In our reading, this treats SCJ’s account of events as a fact to be repeated.
  • Thought: can train a fixed vocabulary. One question asks which groups appear in Revelation, and the answer is “Betrayer, destroyer, and savior.”
  • Emotional: can frame family concern as deception. The people who hand believers over are “Parents and relatives who were deceived”.

Asking students to know the text of Scripture, as Deuteronomy 6:5-9 describes, is not a control technique in itself.
