Answering Shincheonji’s Claims from Scripture

Short answerThe New Testament presents Jesus himself as the way to the Father, the only name by which we must be saved, and the mediator who saves completely.

Shincheonji teaches that Lee Man-hee is the “promised pastor” and “one who overcomes,” who alone can testify to Revelation’s fulfillment. Shincheonji may deny that Lee is Christ or the Messiah. The concern is that it gives him a messianic, saving role. Shincheonji’s own book says that “no one can come to Jesus, gain eternal life, or enter heaven except through the one who overcomes” (p. 10), and that “salvation can only be obtained through the promised one who overcomes” (p. 11).

1Jesus is the Messiah; Lee is not his necessary mediator

Scripture identifies Jesus as the Messiah and the Holy Spirit as the promised Advocate, and it never makes a new human pastor necessary for salvation.

“And if I go and make ready a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be too.” (John 14:3, NET)

Jesus warned that “many will come in my name” and mislead people (Matthew 24:4–5). That warning is not, by itself, a direct proof against every later teacher. But Jesus also promised, “I will come again and take you to be with me” (John 14:3). In John 14–16, the promised Advocate is the Holy Spirit. Jesus calls the Spirit “another Advocate” and “the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name” (John 14:16, 26; 15:26).

Scripture quotations: Matthew 24:4–5; John 14:3, 16, 26; 15:26; John 4:25–26, NET Bible.

So ask: Where does Scripture say Jesus’ return requires a new human pastor whose testimony is necessary for salvation? The Bible identifies Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah (John 4:25–26). Closer Look explains how Shincheonji’s “promised pastor” teaching makes Lee’s role necessary while distinguishing that title from Jesus’ unique identity.

2Jesus promised that Hades would not overpower his church

Jesus promised that the gates of Hades would not overpower his church, so ask Shincheonji to show how the whole church could fall into total apostasy.

“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.” (Matthew 16:18, NET)

Jesus said, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18). Shincheonji’s account requires the Christian church to have fallen into spiritual darkness, making a new saving community necessary. But Jesus promised that Hades would not prevail against his church.

Scripture quotations: Matthew 16:18, NET Bible.

That does not mean every church or church leader is faithful. It does mean pastors should ask Shincheonji to show from the text why Jesus’ promise allows the church to disappear into total apostasy and require Lee Man-hee’s restoration. Closer Look addresses this claim directly.

3Hebrews presents Jesus as God’s final and sufficient revelation

Hebrews teaches that Christ offered himself once for all and saves completely, which leaves no room for a further required testimony.

“So he is able to save completely those who come to God through him because he always lives to intercede for them.” (Hebrews 7:25, NET)

Hebrews begins by saying that God has spoken to us by his Son (Hebrews 1:1–3). It presents Jesus as greater than the prophets and servants who came before him. Hebrews also says that Jesus offered himself “once for all” (Hebrews 7:27; 9:12; 10:10–14) and that he “is able to save completely” those who draw near to God through him (Hebrews 7:25).

Scripture quotations: Hebrews 7:25, 27; 9:12; 10:10, NET Bible.

If salvation requires Lee’s testimony to unlock Revelation, pastors should ask how that requirement fits with Hebrews’ teaching that Christ’s sacrifice is complete and that he saves completely. Closer Look’s articles on the promised pastor and Shincheonji’s view of salvation develop this argument.

4Keep the central question clear

Ask whether Scripture directs sinners to trust in Jesus, or requires them to reach Jesus through Lee Man-hee and Shincheonji.

Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6, NET)

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12, NET)

Keep the central question clear: Does Scripture direct sinners to trust in Jesus, or require them to reach Jesus through Lee Man-hee and Shincheonji? The New Testament presents Jesus himself as the way to the Father (John 14:6), the only name by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12), and the mediator who saves completely (Hebrews 7:25).
