Shincheonji · Immortality
What Happens When Lee Man-hee Dies?
If someone you love is in Shincheonji, you may have wondered about this quietly for a long time. Perhaps you have read a headline about Lee Man-hee’s (이만희) age, or heard your son, daughter, spouse or friend say, “That’s in God’s hands.” You may be hoping his death will bring them home. You may be afraid of what it will do to them.
Both feelings are normal. No one knows what will happen, and this page won’t guess. It sets out what Shincheonji (SCJ) taught, what it has begun to say, what members may go through, and how you can stay close.

Why his death matters so much in SCJ teaching
Most churches would grieve a founder and carry on. SCJ is different because of what its books say about one living man.
Briefly: SCJ teaches that Jesus’ Spirit takes one earthly servant, the “promised pastor,” as his bride. Their spirit-flesh “wedding” is the first resurrection, in which “this mortal puts on immortality,” and those who share in it “leap over the wall of death” (사망의 벽을 뛰어넘어). SCJ identifies the promised pastor as Lee. In 2024 its official blog said the wedding “has not been fulfilled” yet. So the doctrine needs its bride alive on the wedding day. The full argument, with page citations, is on our immortality hub.
Former insiders said this plainly. 신현욱, a former SCJ education director, told a Korean outlet in 2008:
English translationThe peak of faith in Shincheonji is believing that Lee Man-hee’s body will not die but live forever.
What this says
For many members, Lee not dying was not a side belief. It was at the center.
Lee has never written “I will never die,” and he has denied teaching it. But members were given the promise all the same.
What SCJ has already started saying
In recent years SCJ’s wording has moved away from “never die.” Some comes from Lee in public; some from leaked classes and notices, marked as reported by critical outlets.
Lee, in his own words (2023). At a large Word Assembly in Seoul:
English translationLook, everyone. This person is 93 years old. Lived too long, right? Well, a person’s life is up to Heaven. Isn’t living and dying bound to God?
What this says
Lee speaks of his own death as possible and leaves it to God.
The same outlet reported a circulating image, “2023년 4월 총회장 입장,” with the line “죽는 것은 육체지 영혼은 죽지 않는다” (“what dies is the flesh; the soul does not die”). The image has not been verified.
Leaked class material (reported by critical outlets).
English translationThe Chairman’s living or dying is God’s will. … After the Chairman passes, he may appear in another flesh, because Jesus did too.
What this says
According to a former student, new students are being taught that Lee may die, and that he could “appear in another flesh.”
A recorded center class in November 2024 had an instructor (not Lee) say “영생은 장수다” (“eternal life is longevity”), as reported by 교회와신앙. In June 2025 the same outlet published a leaked Telegram notice titled “총회장님 말씀” (“the Chairman’s words”):
English translationLet us finish the remaining work and enter that rest. … We will live in a heaven where there is no pain or death.
What this says
교회와신앙 reads this as a move toward heaven after death; a former member it cites sees an evangelism push. We note both.
The spirit living on. In 2026 the Korean outlet 더세계 attributed this line to SCJ’s internal teaching, citing unnamed cult experts: “육체의 죽음이 곧 끝이 아니며, 사명자는 영으로 영원히 존재 한다” (“the death of the flesh is not the end; the commissioned servant exists forever in spirit”) Secondary · via 더세계. 현대종교 reported in 2025 that SCJ has recast the wedding, which it reads as preparing for Lee’s death (how the doctrine changed).
What members are saying. A mother quoted by CBS News in July 2026 said of her two daughters in SCJ: “They say, ‘The flesh definitely dies, but the soul does not,’ and so on…” Secondary · via CBS.
None of this is an official SCJ statement on what happens after Lee’s death. We have not seen one.
What your loved one may go through
We cannot predict how any one person will respond. We can share what former members said about earlier deaths in SCJ.
When an education director, one of a group SCJ leaders had publicly said would “절대 죽지 않는다” (“absolutely not die”), died around 2010, a lecturer who went to the funeral later wrote:
English translationIf even a founding pillar dies like this without gaining eternal life, what will become of me?
What this says
One death led a committed teacher to ask what the promise meant for him. He left SCJ in December 2011.
Others did not leave. When a tribe leader died in 2004, SCJ reportedly branded him an apostate whose faith “was not enough to enter eternal life” (our translation; 기독교포털뉴스, 2015). Explanations like that can help members stay.
So your loved one might:
- feel grief, shock or confusion, perhaps all at once;
- hold on harder, adopting a new explanation (such as “another flesh” or “the spirit lives on”);
- feel quietly relieved, or ashamed for doubting;
- say nothing for a long time, then ask questions suddenly;
- fear what leaving would cost them in friends, work or meaning.
All of these are human responses. None means you have lost them.
How families can respond, with patience
These suggestions come from peer experience, not clinical training. If someone you love is in crisis or at risk of harm, contact local emergency services or a licensed professional.
Stay in touch now. The relationship you keep today is what they will reach for later. Keep calls and visits warm and ordinary.
Don’t wait for the news to say “I told you so.” If Lee dies, avoid arguments and printouts. Try “How are you doing with this?” and listen.
Ask, don’t tell. Gentle questions leave room: “What were you taught would happen?” “What are your leaders saying now?”
Expect new explanations. If they repeat a new line, such as “eternal life means long life,” you don’t have to correct it. Asking “When did you first hear that?” may be enough.
Keep a door open with no conditions. Tell them clearly that they can always come home, whatever they decide.
Look after yourself. Families carry this for years. Peer support from people who have been there can help. Talk with us →

Frequently asked questions
Is Lee Man-hee supposed to be immortal?
No SCJ book has Lee saying “I will never die,” and he has denied teaching it. But SCJ’s books promise that those in the spirit-flesh “first resurrection” will “leap over the wall of death,” and they place Lee at the center of that union. Former leaders say members were taught that he would not die. Details are on our immortality hub.
What has Shincheonji said about his death?
We know of no official SCJ statement on what happens after his death. In April 2023 Lee said he was 93 and that living and dying are “bound to God.” Critical outlets have reported classes teaching that his death is “God’s will” and that he “may appear in another flesh.” Those reports have not been confirmed by SCJ.
Will my loved one leave Shincheonji when he dies?
No one can say. Some members left after earlier deaths of leaders who were supposed to never die. Others stayed and accepted new explanations. Your steady relationship matters more than the timing.
Should I bring it up with them now?
Gently, if at all. A calm question works better than a debate. Don’t turn his death into a deadline or a threat.
What should I say if it happens?
Start with care, not doctrine: “I heard the news. How are you?” Let them set the pace. If they want to talk about the teaching, listen first.
