The 144,000 and Physical Eternal Life (육체영생)
Ask a Shincheonji member who the 144,000 are, and you will usually hear “the priests of the twelve tribes.” That is true to SCJ’s books, but it leaves out what they were promised: eternal life in the body they have now, 육체영생 (physical eternal life).
This page explains that teaching from SCJ’s own texts. For how it connects to Lee Man-hee (이만희) himself, see the five-step argument on the hub.

1. Who the 144,000 are: priests, not just a number
SCJ reads Revelation 7 and 14 literally: 12,000 from each of twelve tribes, gathered on earth in the last days. Its 2007 doctrinal book separates them from the great multitude that comes afterward.
English translationThese are the new nation, the 144,000 of the twelve tribes of spiritual New Israel. They are God’s kingdom, they are priests, and they reign forever and ever. After this, crowds dressed in white come flocking, and they become the people of God’s kingdom.
What this says
The 144,000 are priests who reign forever. The white-robed crowd are subjects who arrive later.
The English edition gives the same order and links the priests to the first resurrection:
SCJ’s English textAfter New Spiritual Israel is created, the spirits of the martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for God and Jesus, unite with those who refused to worship the beast and its image or to receive its mark. These people are the twelve tribes (i.e., the 144,000) in the physical world that are mentioned in Rv 7 and Rv 14. Once they are together they reign with Christ for 1,000 years. This is called the first resurrection (Rv 20:4-6).
What this says
The first resurrection happens to the 144,000 “in the physical world,” while they are alive.
How the great multitude later came to be included is the subject of a separate page: From 144,000 to the Great Multitude.
2. The spirit-flesh union is the first resurrection
In SCJ teaching, the 144,000 are sealed, and then the spirits of the martyrs come down and unite with them, like a groom with a bride. The 1985 commentary describes the order:
English translationWhen the number is filled in this way, the souls of the martyrs, who are the Holy Spirit of heaven and the bridegroom, come with the Lord, and the first wedding feast since the creation of the world truly takes place. These are the firstfruits who take part in the first resurrection.

What this says
Once the 144,000 are complete, a wedding takes place, and that wedding is the first resurrection.
A 1998 book defines the first resurrection in the same terms:
English translationThe first resurrection means … attending Jesus’ wedding-feast house and putting on the martyred souls who have come there, so that spirit and flesh become one. That is, the soul that lost its flesh puts on a body, and the body puts on the spirit that is one with Jesus.
What this says
“Resurrection” here does not mean the dead rising from graves. It means dead martyrs’ spirits putting on the bodies of living members.
3. “Jumping over the wall of death”
The best-known phrase in this teaching comes from Lee Man-hee’s 1985 commentary on Revelation 20. Here is the fuller passage, including the lines that tie it to the first resurrection:
English translationThe 144,000 spirits, who are the Holy Spirit and the bridegroom, and the 144,000 brides, the holy ones on this earth who have bodies of flesh, each form a pair and become one in marriage. At last, as Paul said, these are the people who are suddenly changed, leap over the wall of death, and rise into the ranks of eternal life. Therefore, as the firstfruits who follow after Jesus, they enjoy the glory of the first resurrection.

What this says
The 144,000 do not pass through death. They “leap over” it while still in the flesh.
The same section closes off physical death too:
English translationBut the holy company who take part in the first resurrection are God’s kingdom and priests, wholly unconnected with the first death and the second death.
원문 · Original그러나 첫째 부활에 참여한 거룩한 무리는 첫째와 둘째 사망과는 전혀 무관한 하나님의 나라와 제사장들이다.
What this says
The promise covers the “first death” (bodily death) as well as the second death of Revelation 20.
4. How SCJ uses 1 Corinthians 15
The proof text the 1985 passage cites is 1 Corinthians 15:50–58, where Paul writes that “we shall all be changed” and that “this mortal must put on immortality.” SCJ applies these verses to the living 144,000, in the present age:
SCJ’s English textAccording to 1 Cor 15:51-54, the spirits of those whose physical bodies have died will be raised with spiritual bodies at the last day. At that time, the bodies of those of us who are alive will be made imperishable. Death will be swallowed up in life (victory) through this transformation of flesh and spirit.
What this says
“Those of us who are alive” receive bodies that cannot perish, through the spirit-flesh union.
Mainstream Christian readings take 1 Corinthians 15 as the resurrection of all believers at Christ’s return. SCJ makes it the way one group of living people never dies.
5. What members were told this meant
Former members describe the same structure. 신현욱, a former SCJ education director, said in 2008:
English translationShincheonji members can receive the promise of physical eternal life only when the 144,000 are filled, but Chairman Lee alone … is already the promised one. So Shincheonji’s doctrine is that even if others die, he must not die.
What this says
Members’ bodily eternal life was tied to the 144,000 being completed.
What this teaching does not say
- No fixed date. The books tie the wedding to the 144,000 being “filled,” not to a calendar date. SCJ’s official English blog said in May 2024 that “the marriage with spirits and flesh in Revelation 19 has not been fulfilled.”
- No first-person promise from Lee. The never-die wording is about the 144,000 and “believers who are alive.” In 2020, SCJ’s affiliated newspaper quoted Lee: “이 몸 이대로 영생한다고 말한 적이 없다” (“I never said I live forever in this body as it is”). The same report says bodies can live forever once “변화되어” (“transformed”), which is the 1 Corinthians 15 reading above.
- Not a static teaching. Who counts as the 144,000, and whether others share the promise, has changed. See the great multitude doctrine change.
